Who is right for this degree programme?
The programme is open to graduates of degree programmes in the natural sciences, economics, or law. For example, graduates of programmes in the following subjects are eligible: biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, agricultural sciences, dietetics, bioanalysis, health care management, law, business administration, economics, marketing, or “Sport, Business & Law”. When examining health and nutrition, we combine a foundation in the natural sciences with aspects of prevention and food production from the fields of law, economics, and sports psychology.
How is the programme organized?
The master's programme is located at campus Bayreuth.
Interdisciplinary training is initially divided into three different tracks according to whether the participants’ previous education was in law, economics, or the natural sciences. Students are assigned to a track for the first semester. Due to the range of expertise required, graduates learn the crucial foundations of the other disciplines in their first semester of study to complement their previous education.
In the second and third semesters of study, all students then complete required courses in food law, epidemiology and biostatistics, food analysis, food production, prevention and health promotion, food supply chain management, and nutrition medicine. The module Food Analysis is designed to provide all students with laboratory experience independent of their previous education. Students also choose one of four possible elective areas: Marketing, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Health Management, or Environment.
The master thesis is completed in the fourth semester and can be carried out in different departments at the Bayreuth campus, depending on the individual focus/interest. It is also possible to carry out your master thesis at the Faculty of Life Sciences at the Kulmbach campus. The overview of previously completed master theses shows the diverse topics.

What kind of career prospects will I have after graduation?
The complex interrelationships between food and health play a crucial role in many different areas of society. Understanding and communicating them requires a superior mastery of concepts and languages from a range of different disciplines. The objective of the degree programme is to train highly qualified future leaders with this in mind. They will be able to apply a thorough understanding of the subject matter when analysing multi-faceted issues, to identify new problems, and to develop flexible proposals for solving them. Our graduates will be qualified to pursue careers in research or in leadership positions in the field of health management, health insurance, in the food industry, in media, and in other areas of politics, administration, and business.
Why should I study in Bayreuth?
The University of Bayreuth is currently rated among the best young universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education worldwide ranking "100 Under 50".
