In the Herzig group we investigate organic semiconductors and their application in organic photovoltaics. Our main focus is on understanding the relationship between fabrication processes, molecular structure and function.
Organic photovoltaic systems utilise organic molecules based on carbon materials with special light absorption and charge transport properties to convert light into electricity. The efficiency of this process depends on many different factors, one of them being the morphology of the photoactive material. We investigate the surface and bulk structures with regard to processing parameters.
It is necessary to find a mass producible and sustainable method to make organic solar cells available for the mass market, because organic photovoltaics could be an important contribution to our future energy supply. Therefore we examine novel preparation routes with emphasis on their influence on the material's morphology, connecting fundamental research with industrial production processes.
